CANADA’S ECONOMY UNEXPECTEDLY LOST JOBS IN JULY

Posted by: Regina Chamber Admin - August 8, 2023

Statistics Canada reported on Friday that Canada lost a total of 6,400 jobs in July after gains of 59,900 jobs in May. Additionally, the report indicated that Canada’s unemployment rate rose to 5,5 per cent, marking the third consecutive monthly increase.

Decreases in construction, public administration, transportation and warehousing were the leading contributors to the job loss numbers in July. Unemployment rose in Alberta, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island while it decreased in Saskatchewan and Manitoba.
