The Government of Canada recently announced it would increase the capital gains inclusion rate (the share of capital gains that is taxed) from 50 per cent to 67 per cent. The change will apply to those with more than $250,000 in capital gains in a year as of June 25, 2024.

The Government of Saskatchewan released its 2024-25 Provincial Budget on Wednesday and included was the decision to maintain the small business tax at one per cent. The tax was previously scheduled to increase to two per cent this year but will now remain at one per cent until June 2025.

The Regina Airport Authority and WestJet made a significant announcement on Monday morning, unveiling a year-round daily flight connecting Regina and Minneapolis. The Bank of Canada announced this morning that is maintaining its interest rate of five per cent. As announced by BOC governor Tiff Macklem, the overnight lending rate is at its highest level in 22 years.

Economists are predicting that the rise of the inflation rate in July will make it difficult for the Bank of Canada not to intervene. Canada’s annual inflation rate fell to 2.8 per cent in June — landing within the Bank of Canada’s target range of one to three per cent. But the inflation rate rose to 3.3 per cent in July and economists are predicting the Bank of Canada may have to become involved in dealing with inflation.

Statistics Canada reported on Friday that Canada lost a total of 6,400 jobs in July after gains of 59,900 jobs in May. Additionally, the report indicated that Canada’s unemployment rate rose to 5,5 per cent, marking the third consecutive monthly increase.

Small business are feeling the pressure as the deadline for repayment of Canada Emergency Business Account (CEBA)  loans is quickly approaching. CEBA loans enabled small businesses and not-for-profits to acquire interest-free loans up to $60,000 during the pandemic. The original deadline for repayment of these loans was extended last year to Dec. 31, 2023 in a bid to assist businesses that were still recovering from the pandemic.

The ADP Canada monthly Happiness@Work Index for May 2023 reveals Gen Zs are bouncing back from their lowest score to date in April. Those located in Alberta, on the contrary, are showing the steepest month-over-month decrease in their Work Happiness Scores.

The Royal Regina Rifles have initiated Operation Calvados, a detailed schedule of events to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day on June 6, 2024. The Allied forces launched Operation Overlord, the largest air and seaborne invasion of the Second World War, on June 6, 1944, in a bid to liberate Europe from Nazi occupation and create a path for the defeat of the Axis Powers.

High wage growth could be bad news when it comes to lowering the inflation rate. Wages for Canadians are now growing faster than inflation but economists are concerned the wage growth might hamper further reduction of the inflation rate.
